When feeling overwhelmed...what do you do?

Every once in a while I feel overwhelmed with how much I have to do. This includes, work, life goals, daily chores, and other things. At these times, it seems like I start procastinating cause I don't know where to start, and where to end. I am not sure how to deal with these situations, and what type of mentality is needed. Although, I know that I will get through the situation, it is very stressful at the time.

So, how do you guys deal with situations like this? How do you deal with stressful situations, and feelings of being overwhelmed? How do you not lose your cool, and maintain your composure?

I am very curious to know...cause I'm sure everyone has their own way.

So, I was foolin' around on the computer and decided to look at your 'self-development' blog. I noticed you posted a question recently regarding feeling overwhelmed and I knew the perfect answer: it depends on how you care to be perceived; care being the operative word. This struck me because I am constantly feeling overwhelmed and stressed with my new position as well as with my personal goals.

In my opinion, there are two types of people: leaders and followers. To me, there is nothing in between. Leaders will (or at the very least, should be) conscience of how others are perceiving them and the effect of what their actions/expressions are to others. In situations of stress or anxiety, these types will take a step back, take a deep breath and re-prioritize what needs to get done first (of course being collected as possible) and go at it full-speed. So I guess it's safe to say that
a person can definitely alter how they react in a stressful situation by first thinking of how people perceive them and what effect it may have on others. Even though people may not care or want to know what others think about them (like you also wrote about in your blog) it can be a very powerful tool to keep yourself in check and grounded.

As far as followers...I don't know much about that 'cause I ain't one. :) LO

Great question,i'm glad i'm not the only one who feels overwhelmed like that sometimes.Usually, as Laura said, you have to assess what needs to be done now and what can wait.I find I get more upset with myself that I didn't plan better and now instead of doing what I may like or want I have to do what takes priority even if it is something I dislike.
It gets harder when you start to think everything,or more than one thing is a priority..... and you think of the future and how you want your life to be and think of how much work it will take to get there....that is when I have to say ,ok take it easy, step back and look at all the things you have done and accomplished and stop being so hard on yourself.
Then I reflect on what I really want in life.I have the bad habit of taking on too many things at once, work, school, relationships, exercise, travel, social committments....it gets to the point when you have to choose. What is the most important thing you want to accomplish right now, what do you value, what are your goals? Then prioritize from there. I think for everyone the answers/priorities change depending on where you are in your life and what is important to you at the time.It is easy to get overwhelmed but as Jim Morrison sang "keep your eyes on the road you hands upon the wheel"
